Performance Bounds for Peer-Assisted Live Streaming

ثبت نشده
چکیده

Peer-assisted live streaming is a promising way for service providers to offer high-quality IPTV to consumers at reasonable cost. In peerassisted streaming, the peers (e.g., running on set-top boxes) exchange video chunks with one another, and receive additional data from the central server as needed. In this paper, we analyze how to provision resources for the streaming system, in terms of the server capacity, the video quality, and the depth of the distribution trees that deliver the content. We derive the optimal values for minimum server load, maximum stream rate, and minimum hop count under different constraints on how the peers contribute to the system, including their upload capacity and the number of neighbors they can support. In addition to showing that our performance bounds are tight, we present algorithms for constructing trees that achieve our bounds.

Delay Bounds of Peer-to-Peer Video Streaming

Peer-to-Peer (P2P) systems exploit the uploading bandwidth of individual peers to distribute content at low server cost. While the P2P bandwidth sharing design is very efficient for bandwidth sensitive applications, it imposes a fundamental performance constraint for delay sensitive applications: the uploading bandwidth of a peer cannot be utilized to upload a piece of content until it complete...

Cooperative Push/Pull Protocols for Live Peer-Assisted Streaming

Video streaming is rapidly becoming one of the key services of the Internet. Most streaming is today “on demand” and delivered via unicast delivery; however, many applications require delivery to many end-users and the lack of ubiquitous IP multicast remains a weakness of the Internet. Given this scenario, the peer-to-peer (P2P) or peer-assisted communications is an appealing solution, especial...

Peer-Assisted Media Streaming: A Holistic Review

This chapter presents a holistic review of recent research advances in peer-assisted streaming systems, including both live and on-demand streaming. We approach this task by first presenting design objectives of streaming systems in general, and then discuss differences between live and on-demand streaming. These common and different design objectives motivate the protocol design space in strea...

A Review on Peer-to-Peer Live Video Streaming Topology

Peer-to-peer systems become a promising alternative for traditional server-client system to providing video streaming; the topology is the one of most important part of these systems. This paper talking about the simple concept of topology in p2p live video streaming and presents a review for p2p live video streaming topology, in this paper three main types of topology that most used in p2p liv...

Characterizing Locality-aware P2P Streaming

Peer-to-peer (P2P) live streaming systems have been increasingly popular and successful in today’s Internet, which provide large collections of video channels to millions of users at low server costs. The large volumes of P2P streaming traffic are exceeding those incurred by BitTorrent-like file sharing applications, threatening huge traffic relay cost to the Internet service providers (ISPs). ...
